The Murray Shire is home to some 7,000 residents, covers 4,328km square and is almost totally surrounded by the mighty Murray River and its tributaries.

Murray Shire consistently ranks amongst the fastest growing Local Government Areas (LGA) in New South Wales. In 2009, Murray Shire grew to a population of 7,076, resulting in the third fastest population growth of any LGA in NSW. Murray Shire Council has established a reputation as an innovative Local Government authority, which is proactive in attracting new industry and developments.

The Shire's main township is Moama, which is usually paired with its Victorian neighbour, Echuca. Echuca-Moama is known as the Paddlesteamer capital of Australia and is ideally positioned on the NSW and Victorian border at the closet point of the Murray River to Melbourne. This perfect location provides for an area booming with tourism, industry, business development and new residents.

Mathoura, a small country town 40km north of Moama, still retains much of its unique outback heritage and is considered to be a gateway to Australia's largest red gum forest and waterways.

Murray Shire also has a number of small rural communities, including Bunnaloo, Caldwell and Womboota.

Echuca-Moama Bridge Planning Study

The Victorian Minister for Roads and Ports announced in December 2007, that agreement in principle had been reached between the Campaspe and Murray Shires and the Yorta Yorta Nation Aboriginal Corporation (YYNAC), to further investigate the Mid - West route for a second Murray River crossing at Echuca-Moama.

The Mid - West route has the potential to provide an effective link between Warren Street and the Cobb Highway, crossing the Murray River downstream of the Echuca Caravan Park.

Informatin on the study is available from VicRoads
