Murray Shire Mayor, Councillor Brian Sharp, and fellow Councillors welcome you to the Murray Shire.

Please take the time to browse through the information contained in the Murray Shire New Resident Welcome Kit and learn more about the progressive Murray shire Counil and the existing region we serve. The kit can be downloaded by clicking on the link below.

The Murray Shire sweeps across an area of 4,328 km square and is home to approximately 7,000 residents. The Shire has a wealth of physical features including majestic sweeping plains, magnificent stands of Red Gum forests, and is almost totally surrounded by the mighty Murray River and its tributaries.

The main settlements in the Shire include Moama, gateway to this inland paradise; and Mathoura, a quaint but progressive country town still retaining its unique outback heritage. Other settlements include Bunnaloo and Womboota, each with a population under 100.

Only 200 kilometres from Melbourne, the Murray Shire has a growing tourism industry with visitors travelling to the region to take in the unique recreational, cultural and heritage activities and experiences on offer. The Murray River and its association with extensive areas of high natural and cultural value provide a significant environment for recreation.

The area attracts a large number of day visitors from a broad regional population base who engage in a range of passive and active leisure activities within these environments. Notable activities include sightseeing, town centred activities, fishing, swimming, picnicking, canoeing, active water sports, camping and bushwalking. The more laid back can always find a peaceful spot to relax under a Red Gum by the gently lapping shores of the mighty Murray River or by savouring a more cosmopolitan form of relaxation at one of the many wineries in the Shire.

Indeed, the Murray Shire is regarded as an innovative Local Government Authority and the successful Great Mathoura Land Giveaway Project illustrates this. The Shire has been proactive in encouraging development in the past seven (7) years and has actively assisted in the establishment of a new wine industry in the Shire.

These innovative business practices combined with carefully cultivated relationships with Shire stakeholders has seen Murray Shire consistengly register in the top 10 fastest growing Local Government areas in NSW. In February 2007 the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) released the Estimated Resident Population for Local Government areas, which showed that Murray Shire Council was the fastest growing Local Government area in NSW from 2005 to 2006, with a recorded growth rate of 4.1%. The Council area has recorded an average annual growth rate over the past five (5) years of 2.6%.

With tourism, industry and an idyllic rural lifestyle, the Murray Shire is a growing region with much to offer. Murray Shire is a great place to visit and an even better place to live!
