At a function held last night (Monday 17 November 2008) to welcome over 400 of the nation's mayors and shire presidents to Canberra for the inaugural meeting of the Australian Council of Local Government, the winners of the prestigious National Awards for Local Government were announced.

Murray Shire Council submitted an application to the Awards on behalf of the five shires involved in the Long Paddock project (Murray, Deniliquin, Conargo, Hay and Central Darling) and was last night announced the winner of the National Award for Excellence (for a small council).

In September, the Long Paddock Cobb Highway Touring Route project was announced winner of the Innovation in Regional Development category (small council section) of the Awards. Each category winner made a presentation to the judging panel in Canberra, who then nominated the national winners.

Long Paddock President, Peter McCrabb is delighted with the win, "The councils involved in the Long Paddock project have worked tirelessly over many years to get it off the ground and now the project is really starting to gain great momentum. The national recognition to be gained from this Award will be wonderful for our region."

There are many developments underway within the project, including the exciting Artback project, involving a major piece of artwork being installed in each of the five shires; a new look website; the upcoming release of a new CD; some exciting partnerships with Tourism NSW and upcoming promotional campaigns.
