Keep our Kids Safe and Slow Down in 40km/hr School Zones

Last modified: November 19, 2009 - 10:22 PM

With local schools going back recently, the Murray Shire is urging motorists to slow down and observe speed limits in 40km/h school zones.

Murray Shire Mayor, Councillor Brian Sharp, said that most 40km/h school zones operate between 8.00am to 9.30am and 2.30pm to 4.00pm Monday to Friday, and that drivers need to observe the school zone speed limits even it school children are not visible.

"We want to foster a community approach to keeping our kids safe in the Murray Shire. Motorists in school zones need to slow down, and be aware of their surroundings. Young children can be unpredictable at times, and 40km/h zones give motorists a better ability to avoid accidents."

"Fines for exceeding 40km/h in a school zone include a loss of four demerit points and at least a $135 fine, you have to ask yourself, is speeding really worth it?", said Cr Sharp.

"School opening and closing times are busy periods for pedestrian and vehicle traffic outside our local schools. Drivers in the Murray Shire have the responsibility of ensuring the safety of all children," he said.

As a further precaution, the Murray Shire speed observation sign will be focussed directly on school zones in the Murray Shire at various times.
