Respite Program Cares for Carers

Last modified: November 19, 2009 - 10:24 PM

A new program operating in Moama is proving a boon for both carers and those in their charge. The All Day Respite Program has been developed jointly by Murray Shire’s Community Services Department and the Regional Social Development Group Deniliquin. It operates once a week in the Moama Senior Citizens’ Centre, Martin Street, Moama. Held on Thursdays, it runs from 10:00am until 4:00pm and a healthy lunch is available for a nominal cost.

Respite staff, assisted by a group of enthusiastic volunteers, conducts a program of activities catering for a variety of interests. They aim to give carers a chance to take a break from often stressful situations to attend appointments, go shopping, or simply take a well-earned break and socialise with friends or family. For clients, it prevents them from being isolated from the outside world and allows them to get out of the house and converse with other people. Transport can also be arranged for those who need it.

Further information about the Program can be obtained from Sandy Kirchhofer at Murray Shire’s Moama Branch Office on (03) 5482 1400.
